Wordfence: Free versus Premium

by

The popularity of WordPress (WP) makes it an appealing target for intruders. Outdated versions of WordPress installations, themes and plugins could result in your website being attacked. Vulnerabilities make your website susceptible to intrusions from outsiders with malicious intent.

If you, like many business owners, are of the opinion that your business website is unlikely to be affected by cybercrime, please think again. According to a Sophos Security Threat Report, on average 30,000 websites are hacked every day. Thus, adding site security measures is of great importance.

For this reason, security monitoring is a standard maintenance task that is included in our WordPress Backend Maintenance Service packages. We also install the free version of Wordfence (an End-point WAF – Web Application Firewall) for all our clients with WordPress websites.

Wordfence Premium

If our maintenance team picks up on increased hacking attacks on your site while performing the security monitoring, they will flag this with you and upon your approval, install and manage the Wordfence Premium firewall for you at R150 per month.

The convenience is that we renew and pay the license on your behalf and just include it as a line item to your monthly maintenance invoice.

In addition to the protection you get with the free version (listed here), Wordfence Premium also includes:

Real-time protection

With Wordfence premium your Firewall rules and Scan malware signatures are updated in real-time, providing you with immediate protection against new threats and immediate detection of new malware and vulnerabilities.

Country blocking

Country blocking is a premium feature that allows you to restrict access to your login page or the whole site to specific countries. You can read more about Country Blocking here.

Real-Time IP Blacklist

Users of both the free and premium versions of Wordfence can choose to participate in the Wordfence Security Network. This allows us to track malicious behaviour of specific IP addresses on a large number of sites. When we notice that an IP address is behaving badly, it is automatically added to the Wordfence IP Blacklist. The Real-Time IP Blacklist is a premium feature of Wordfence that completely blocks access to your site from these IP addresses.

NOTE: Users of the free version of Wordfence will only receive automatic blocking of IP addresses that have been engaged in brute force login attacks seen via the Wordfence Security Network. Premium users of the plugin will receive additional automatic blocking of IP addresses carrying out other complex attacks via the Real-Time IP Blacklist feature. You can read more about the Wordfence Security Network here.
