Choosing your hosting environment

by

Pathfind Media has servers with three separate hosting companies:

  1. Xneelo: shared hosting environment on our own dedicated server [1] – for our South African and African clients’ websites/email. This is our primary server.
  2. SiteGround: normal shared hosting environment on a standard server [2]– for our UK clients (The EU and UK’s GDPR requires hosting within EU/UK)
  3. Digital Ocean: dedicated virtual server [3] for our eCommerce clients and clients who require website speed as a priority.

Which option is the best to choose?

  • If you are not price-sensitive and want the best website performance, a dedicated virtual server [3] is the best option.
  • If you want a great website performance at the best price and support, a shared hosting environment on Pathfind’s dedicated server [1] is the best option.
  • If you want an acceptable website performance at the same price as a shared hosting environment on Pathfind’s dedicated server [1] without Pathfind Media’s support, so in essence to manage your own hosting, a normal shared hosting environment on a standard server [2] is the best option. Although, some WordPress themes require a specific memory allocation that might not be available in a normal shared hosting environment on a standard server [2].

Some clients are concerned about letting a single website design agency, like Pathfind Media manage their hosting to avoid handing over control.

In terms of the client’s control, Pathfind Media’s policy is:

  • Domains are registered in the client’s name, so there is never a “hostage situation”. It is easy to release domains, as the client is the registered owner. We are simply the administrators.
  • We can give full access to the control panel of the hosting environment, as well as remote File Transfer Protocol (FTP) access, by sharing the login details.
  • Clients are added as direct contacts at the hosting company so can enquire and manage their own domain, email and website.
