behind Pathfind Media

What's behind the name Pathfind?

Introduction

Where there is no vision, the people perish! (See Proverbs 29:18)

“The reason most people never reach their dreams is that they do not define them or ever really consider them as achievable. Visionaries can tell you where they are going, what they plan to do along the way and who will be sharing the adventure with them.”

David Bleakly writes about such visionaries, the people with a “hunch for the alternative” – those who believe that it is possible to build a better world. He calls them PATHFINDERS, those who are “lovers of our planet, who feel a responsibility for God’s creation, and wish to give true meaning to the lives of all his people.” Indeed, he is confident, as I am, that such PATHFINDERS represent a growing ground-swell of change in society.

About the Founder of Pathfind Media

As for me, Jo Wagner, I grew up in a small town and really had the stereotypical “small town mentality” and very limited exposure to the “bigger world”. I had no idea of vision or purpose. I only knew the immediate satisfaction and short-term goals. I was a selfish person. I finally escaped the small town to attend university in Potchefstroom, South Africa. At a first-year camp, I attended, I made new friends who had such inspiring inner joy and vision. This really impacted me. They led me to the source of their joy and vision: Jesus. To enjoy Him, I had to repent of my selfish (sinful) nature which had had me stuck in depression and addiction. I received His gift of grace that still empowers me to have the abundant joy and vision I have not had before.

This was in 2005 – the year my journey as a pathfinder began. I read the book Wild at Heart (by John Eldridge) and discovered that for every man there is an adventure to live (the need to play), a beauty to rescue (a partner to find) and a battle to fight (a purpose to live for). All men express these aspirations somehow. Each man must just decide if his expression will matter. As the famous saying from Russel Crowe’s character in Gladiator goes: “what you do in life, will echo in eternity”.

After my encounter with God, my love for the outdoors and travelling grew. I combined this passion with my heart for broken young people and the nations. Ever since I have hosted close to 100 leadership- and Christian camps and have travelled to over 30 countries, mostly for missions. In this way, I lived my adventure. During one of my first travels, I met my beauty and she became my wife two years later.

And my battle to fight? Effective communication! The careful construction and delivering of ideas is my way of doing combat. After studying Tourism and Marketing, and working for various NPOs as marketing manager, I developed a vague vision for a marketing communications agency. I wanted to help small businesses fight and win their marketing battles. I quickly realised the best way of doing this is through well-designed graphics and well-crafted marketing messages, all coming together on the cornerstone of a well-built website. With original, creative content, a small business can “pathfind” their way in this media-drenched society to speak clearly to their target audience.

And so Pathfind Media was found

Pathfinding is the plotting of the shortest route between two points. It is a practical way to solve mazes: examining how to find the path between two points that best meets certain criteria, whether it be the shortest, cheapest, fastest, etc. route.

In essence, “pathfinding” is a form of visionary leadership. In our context, it entails navigating a business from their current status (point A) to their marketing goal (point B). We want to explore these routes on behalf of small businesses while making the journey an adventure!

Hence the name Pathfind Media.
